StarCraft is still the reigning gold standard for real-time strategy games since it's release in 1995. It's about the only 14 year old game you'll still find on store shelves. It's a little extra work to get it to install on OS X, but it can be done if you just hit Blizzard's website to download the OS X installer first.

Graphics weren't much to look at even in 1995, but it's still an EXCELLENT game. Like I said, it still represents the gold standard in that genre, and all other RTS games are held up against it. I think WarCraft 3 was also released for the Mac, so if you like StarCraft, WarCraft 3 is by the same company and a similar sort of game. StarCraft 2 is presumably due out some time later this year. And if you don't see the fundamental problem with having to pay for a game, and then keep paying every month to be able to play it, there's World of Warcraft. That's all that really comes to mind at the moment.

I gave up on computer gaming years ago, and moved into the console world, where I'm quite happy to be off the upgrade treadmill that computer gaming requires. Just hit a couple of game review sites, and look for games that also have Mac clients. Just keep in mind that laptops are not very good gaming platforms, so look for games 5-6 years old.
