A: I think most of my early influences were people like Ice Cube, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg. I was really into west coast gangsta rap.

It had a good hardcore beat, and an interesting, albeit sometimes violent, story. That was probably my first real experience with hip-hop music. I really liked the way the beats from the west coast sounded, and I liked when they told funny narratives over those beats. Q: I would imagine that at first you just sang along with your favorite tracks. When did you discover that you could actually create your own rhymes?

A: When I was 17 in high school, I had a double study hall after lunch. I really had not a whole lot of work to do. I wasn't a very good student.

I just didn't connect with the concept of going to school until later in life. Now, I actually appreciate it a lot more and wish I could do it again. I started writing lyrics during study hall because I was bored, and it was really a matter of me realizing that it was fun. I never said that maybe I'd turn this into a career or anything for the first several years. It was always about getting my friends to tell me I was good enough. I started, and I kept getting better and better until eventually it turned into what it's turned into.
