I only have 2 complaints when running Eclipse under Mac OS 10.2.6: - Eclipse is very slow. I very much hope the performance will be better in one of the next releases.

On a Mac: In Eclipse’s main menu, select Eclipse→Preferences. As a result, Eclipse’s Preferences dialog appears. In the tree on the left side of the Preferences dialog, expand the Java branch.

Are there some informations about optimizations for mac os? - Eclipse crashes (about 3 times per hour). The version is stable and 'rock solid' under NT, and XP. I never had a crash when running Eclipse under these systems. I can't give an exact error report.

The situation differs and the crash is not reproducable. But it chrashes often when I start an ant task and the console window is not open. Has anyone else made these observation? Is there something in the settings which could be wrong? Regards Jan Dieckmann.

My Windows box (PIII 933 MHz / 512 MB RAM) runs Eclipse 2.1 noticeably faster than my Eclipse running on my OS X box (G4 1 GHz / 1 GB RAM). The GUI is much more responsive on my Windows box. I'm surmising that this performance difference may be partially due to the OS X implementation of SWT.

Obviously, there are many performance factors to consider since we are kind of comparing apples with oranges. But, the performance degradation of Eclipse on my OS X is such that it is a problem (I mean code assist takes longer than me typing in things myself!). As for the stability of Eclipse on OS X, I've had it crash on me a few times, but certainly not as much as you have experienced.

I don't use Ant though. Make sure you have the latest JVM (1.4.1) for OS X.

Eclipse crashes no more often than other OS X apps. OS X as a whole feels a bit like Win98 in terms of stability. On the whole though, I'm glad we have Eclipse as an option. You're right, it is a great IDE. The standard Swing widgets look like ass and it's great to see better looking interfaces with SWT. Peter Jan Dieckmann wrote: > Eclipse 2.1 is really a great IDE.
