I don't believe that's a problem anymore, or my current Macbook 2012 is fast enough to compensate for the difference. You'll have to take games on a case by case basis, some games written for DirectX may be poorly optimised when ported to OpenGL in order to work under OSX, some ports may perform as well. Even if performance is poor relative to Windows, it may not even matter if you can still get 60 fps at max settings. If you have doubts about performance, try it under Windows if you can. Very casual player here. In my experience, coming from a MBPr 13', most games that are made for Mac run just fine.
There are some exceptions, but they are few IMO. If you use steam you can single out those that work on Mac and look at their system requirements before installing.
I used to have a Boot Camp partition for gaming, but honestly, the biggest reason for that is the much superior library available for Windows compared to the one for Mac. I don't know which operating system uses your hardware the best for gaming, but unless you're a graphics nut or pro gamer, gaming on OS X will be just fine.
In fact, I just slayed some zombies in Left4Dead on OS X, with no lag or stutter what so ever. If you're a hardcore gamer and value that more than what Apple excels in, perhaps a dedicated gaming laptop is a better choice. If not, Civ V works just fine on the smaller brother and probably a lot better on the bigger brother with a discrete GPU.
