These issues are addressed by updating to Java version 1.6.0_24.

Hi guys -- I got a tough one here: I use a company-specific Java app that runs fine on several machines running OS 10.3.9, 10.4.11 and 10.5.8. However, on this last one, it stopped working when on the Mac OS software update panel (the one that is built into the OS to download software) I accepted to make this update: My company's IT dept no longer supports Mac for this software, only Windows so I'm left with finding a solution by myself. So I see two options: a) Is there an app out there than can run Java programs on it's own without the need of the OS core Java components?

Mac OS X 10.5.8 with recent software and hardware updates; Java SE Development Kit - JDK 1.6 preferred; JDK 1.5 supported (please refer to Release Notes. Where can I get the java download for this? And/or: b) How can I go back to the previous OS Java components so as to have it like it was just before I made the update? I'm concerned about taking this route as I don't know if it will affect other stuff. While it would be wonderful to just install the Update 7 Java update, that would leave the chance of mixed Update 7 and 8 modules. Google drive for mac ppc. You could try that, but it might not work. I didn't find it on the Apple website, however, it's also located at Do you have a pre-new Java release backup you could restore? In lieu of that, you could reinstall OS X 10.5, apply the appropriate combo update(s) (there's one for 10.0 to 10.5 and one for 10.5 to 10.8), then do Software Update and, obviously, don't choose Java Update 8. If you go this route, repair permissions before and after each combo update.

Perhaps someone is aware of another program that can run a Java environment. While it would be wonderful to just install the Update 7 Java update, that would leave the chance of mixed Update 7 and 8 modules.

If I don't find a better solution I'll try your 2nd option but what do you mean by 'combo' update? My understanding is to simply insert the OS 10.5 installation CD, reinstall the OS and the just keep updating it via the OS SSoftware update panel and stop untill I see the scary Java 8 update.

Is that what you meant? While you can do it that way, the combo update picks up operating system updates through a collection of releases. When dealing with operating system upgrades, I've found using the combo updates to be more reliable than Software Update, as sometimes Software Update doesn't apply updates correctly, and weird things can happen.

So I did an 'Archived & install' and went back from 10.5.8 to 10.4.11 (I didn't have the 10.5 CD but only a 10.4.7 one which is the one I used and then updated to 10.4.11 via the software update panel).
