Citrix Xendesktop For Mac
In the biggest 'wow' announcement from San Francisco, Citrix publicly demoed the delivery a remote Mac OS X desktop to any client device running the (which is available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Blackberry, Android, WebOS, etc.) Connecting to a remote Mac OS X desktop has been available for a long time via products like LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, VNC, etc. And has a product that extends the Mac OS X desktop to client devices running via Microsoft RDP (which Aqua Connect licensed from Microsoft). So while this *concept* is nothing new, what's new today is that this connection was done via, which is very advanced and allows for high performance multimedia and a great user experience. In his on-stage demo, Citrix's Gus Pinto showed off Angry Birds and the latest Pirates of the Caribbean demo, and as you'd expect from an HDX connection, the experience was great. Citrix didn't share to many details except to confirm that the remote system was running on Apple-branded hardware. They wouldn't clarify whether that instance of the OS was physical or virtual, but we've previously read that as a platform for guest VMs, so it's plausible that we'll see some sort of 'Mac VDI' offering at some point. Here's a snippet of the keynote which featured the Mac HDX demo: I don't think this will lead to massive migrations to Macs in the enterprise, but it will be nice for Mac users to have options to move their primary desktops to the datacenter just like Windows users have.
And something like for Mac would sure be nice for remote access! What does this mean for Aqua Connect? I guess they'll continue to focus on the 'value' play? Interesting and unexpected.

The performance of Citrix Receiver 12.8 for Mac has improved nearly 5x over Citrix Receiver 12.7 for Mac and it is on par with Citrix Receiver 4.9 for Windows, especially with HDX 3D Pro XenDesktop environment running graphics intensive workloads. This performance leap is attributed to optimization of threading architecture and fine-tuning the Thinwire graphics pipeline. In Citrix Receiver for Mac 12.5, we had optimized the H264 graphics pipeline by supporting hardware-accelerated Video Toolbox H264 decoder and OpenGL renderer. For more information, click here. Citrix Receiver 12.8 for Mac can easily absorb graphics-intensive workloads, such as CAD applications, high-end games, rendering billions of triangles per second using Direct X. This resulted in near-native experience and high client side FPS when using HDX 3D Pro environment equipped with vGPU. Also, appropriate HDX 3D Pro policies need to be set on DDC.
Improvements can be observed across Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop sessions irrespective of whether it is an HDX 3D Pro session or not. This achievement is attributed to the changes in threading architecture and fine-tuning of the Thinwire graphics pipeline for heavy graphics workloads, especially for HDX 3D Pro and CPU usage optimization. We took client-side average FPS as the benchmark in Citrix Receiver 12.8 for Mac and compared this to Citrix Receiver12.7 for Mac. Tests were run on a MacBook Pro (Intel i7 processor, 16GB RAM, and Intel Iris Pro built-in graphics) in the Citrix XenDesktop environment 7.15 (HDX 3D Pro VDA running Windows 10 on NVIDIA GRID vGPU.)
